Enlighten -Action for Epilepsy is a seven and a half year old non-medical, non-governmental, bi-lingual independent Hong Kong registered charitable organisation that aims to benefit anyone directly or indirectly affected by Epilepsy in Hong Kong by providing a range of complimentary, bi-lingual Epilepsy Community Support & Care Programmes and Community Epilepsy Education, Training, and Awareness Programmes to all sectors of the Hong Kong community.

Our Community Epilepsy Education, Training, and Awareness Programmes enable us to directly educate and train people about Epilepsy in the First Aid Management for Epileptic Seizures.

Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders that affect people in every country throughout the world. Hong Kong is no exception. We believe there are over 100,000 people who have epilepsy in Hong Kong yet the stigma attached to epilepsy is out of proportion and continues to be ‘swept under the carpet’.

We work with many individuals and families who live in silence for fear they will be discriminated against because of their condition. Job loss, lack of family support, physical violence, and isolation are just some of the cases we come across because of the attitudes towards epilepsy.

We work for those affected directly or indirectly by epilepsy in Hong Kong. People you know, people you care about and we work to help those affected by epilepsy all over Hong Kong have a better quality of life through support and education that they otherwise would not be able to afford or have access to.

Full time, qualified staff provides a range of specialised services including but not limited to, advice, support, counselling, advocacy, epilepsy management training, community epilepsy awareness and education programmes.   Enlighten was officially registered as a charitable organisation in Hong Kong on August 7th, 2002.

Enlighten Action for Epilepsy’s mission is to widen opportunities and choices for people affected by epilepsy in Hong Kong and to raise awareness of epilepsy issues in all sectors of the community. Our vision is that people with epilepsy and affected by epilepsy will achieve greater control of their lives through support and be given equal opportunities in our society.

Our Aims & Objectives:

  • To offer free of charge personalised services to people with epilepsy, their families, carers, friends and colleagues.
  • To break through the myths and misunderstandings about epilepsy.
  • To eliminate fear and stigma that surrounds epilepsy.
  • Increase support and understating for those affected by Epilepsy.
  • Ensure those affected by Epilepsy are included in our society.
  • Provide up to date facts and information.

Our combined programmes provide and improve awareness, educate, inform, influence and shape opinions about epilepsy within the Hong Kong community. By doing this we establish a supportive environment in which people with epilepsy can have a better Quality of Life.  Our services provide the key to opening the door for so many who need support and friendship.

We remain the only bi-lingual epilepsy focused group in Hong Kong that deals specifically with epilepsy and everything that surrounds it on a fulltime basis throughout the region, to all nationalities.

Whilst we believe we have accomplished a tremendous amount, there is still much for us to do. Epilepsy is still a hidden condition in Hong Kong.  Epilepsy Education, Training, Awareness and Support allow all members of our community to be respected as individuals, as opposed to being discriminated against because they have epilepsy.

Enlightens core key complimentary services are:

(A) Bi-Lingual Epilepsy Community Support & Care Programmes

and

(B) Bi-lingual Community Epilepsy Education, Training, and Awareness Programmes to all sectors of the Hong Kong community, directly or indirectly affected by Epilepsy.

Our (A) Bi-lingual Community Support & Care Programmes assist people from our diverse community as many of those who need assistance often do not receive it or indeed ask for it. We provide complimentary bi-lingual outpatient (non-medical) services by providing care and support for those with Epilepsy, their families, and carers so that they can have a better Quality of Life.

The (B) Bi-lingual Community Epilepsy Education, Training, and Awareness Programmes provide Hong Kong with a programme that addresses the overwhelming problem of misunderstanding and stigma attached to Epilepsy. This aims to improve the lives of people with and affected by this condition and to promote social inclusion, equality within diversity, and tolerance. By improving the knowledge and understanding of Epilepsy and developing skills needed to effectively deal with Epilepsy and Epileptic Seizures we establish a supportive environment in which people with Epilepsy are treated with the respect they deserve.
